Sitting With Uncertainty: A Practice
Uncertainty is the native climate of creative work — and one of the hardest things for the anxious creative to bear. This piece offers a short practice for staying with the not-knowing, without reaching immediately for resolution or distraction.
Every unfinished project, every unsent submission, every blank canvas holds within it a vast uncertainty. Will it be good? Will it matter? Will anyone care?
We are wired to find this uncomfortable. The nervous system interprets ambiguity as threat. But creative work lives in ambiguity — that is where the interesting things happen.
Try this: the next time you feel the pull to close the laptop or scroll your phone, sit with the discomfort for just two more minutes. Notice where it lives in your body. Name it without trying to fix it. You may find it shifts on its own.
