The Inner Critic and the Inner Artist
Every creative person houses two voices: the one that makes and the one that judges. Understanding the relationship between them — rather than trying to silence the critic — is often where the real work begins. We explore how to create a dialogue between these parts of yourself.
Julia Cameron famously called the inner critic the "censor" — the voice that tells you your work is not good enough before you have even finished a sentence. But the inner critic is not an enemy to be vanquished.
In creative coaching, we often find that the inner critic is a protective part: it fears exposure, rejection, and failure. Seen through that lens, it becomes possible to thank it for its concern — and gently step past it.
The inner artist, meanwhile, needs play, permission, and safety. Creating conditions for both voices to coexist is the foundation of sustainable creative practice.
